The Korean smash burgers are DELECTABLE, and I loved the fresh battered fries! The outdoor trestle table is charming (although easier to get in and out of on the ends); when my friend and I visited, the weather was sunny and warm, but I think the pergola will provide excellent shelter for light rain. They also have propane heaters to keep diners warm in the cooler months! The pumpkin patch is also a delightful feature, where folks are invited to pick their pumpkin. There’s a hay cart ride, and also pigs and goats to pet (you can also buy grain to feed the animals!) They also are coffee connoisseurs, so I’ll have to update this review when I enjoy their coffee! Additionally, they grow an incredible selection of flowers on site, so the scenery surrounding your meal is beautified! 100% will be returning to stay at their lovely AirBnB again, since the accommodations are also WONDERFUL. The house has three bedrooms (one queen, two doubles?); one bathroom with a jacuzzi bathtub and separate shower; kitchen with fridge, microwave, and stove+oven; washer + dryer; lovely family room with wood stove and 42” flatscreen and a view of the pumpkin patch; a lovely deck with plenty of outdoor couches; and a huge trestle table that seats 6 comfortably, up to 8.
This review is specifically about the Supper Club experience at Shady Hazel Farm, and what a great asset it is to the Sunshine Coast experience for fellow foodie travellers One of the things we appreciated most is how successfully the owners are bringing together two worlds that really belong together. Organic farming and the foodie experience. The closer people who love food can get to the farms, growers and ingredients behind it, the better. Shady Hazel takes that connection a step further and turns it into a genuinely entertaining and memorable evening. We had a chance to talk with owner Ian about the considerable care he puts into finding and bringing “rockstar chefs” to the farm to create these special evenings. He actually travels to meet prospective chefs and experience their food himself before inviting them to collaborate. That commitment really comes through. In our case, the guest chef was critically acclaimed Chef Alex Chen of Boulevard, and the five-course dinner was both creative and very approachable. There were some terrific combinations, including heirloom tomatoes with Dungeness crab, char siu lingcod cheeks with bao, ember-roasted quail, Berkshire pork with late-summer beans and corn, and an apple tarte tatin to finish. The lingcod cheeks were a particular standout. Very flavorful and something we probably would not have experienced otherwise. What made it even better was experiencing the food in the setting where so much of the philosophy behind it begins. You could see the gardens around you, watch some of the cooking happening, and smell the food coming off the grills while anticipating the next course. You also heard directly from the chef and his team about what they were preparing and the thinking behind it. Kudos as well to Chef Alex Chen and his entire team. It was obvious how much preparation and effort went into pulling off an evening like this. There are a lot of moving parts in serving a multi-course dinner in this kind of setting, and you could tell it was very much a passion project for everyone involved. The communal long-table format was another nice part of the evening. We met some fellow foodies and had some great conversations throughout dinner, so it felt much more like an event than simply going out for a meal. A real credit to Ian and the entire Shady Hazel Farm team. It is great to see this kind of experience innovation happening in a unique Canadian setting. Bringing people closer to farming and the source of their food, while supporting local agriculture and helping grow the Sunshine Coast culinary scene, is something worth celebrating. Highly recommended.
Highly recommend any and all events this farm puts on. From their annual pumpkin patch (that gets better every year), to their long table dinners (bringing the best of the best to the coast), to their stunning flowers at market, and their farm stand - whatever they do, I’m all in. The cherry on top is their outstanding hospitality, warm and friendly staff, welcoming environment, and attention to detail. Their prices are fair, they make their guests feel like friends and they are clearly doing this because they love their community.
We came for the pumpkins. Most were the regular orange ones, but they did have a few small round white ones and some stout peach coloured ones. All $1 per pound. Much to our surprise there were small pigs to pet, and they also had a chicken Koop. The kids seemed entertained. A few folks were listening to music while partaking in hot cider, and fast food. Lots going on. The parking was tight.
What an experience, Ian shows care, love, dedication to his farm and animals. Perfect spot for the family, great atmosphere. Very impressed with the shere knowledge, and explanation of all elements, that keep this farm truly sustainable.
